Private Security

private_security_services

Increasingly with the perceived rise in crime the rich are turning to private security. But are the companies they turn to doing anything more than a glorified burglar alarm or are they merely fleecing the rich and capitalising on the threat of crime.

The papers are always filled with stories about crime. And we’re completely obsessed with reading about crime. Rape, murder and being stabbed could happen to anyone in our society of fear.

To counter this, private security firms have offered to patrol affluent area in exchange for cash, taking thousands to protect the people and their properties.

They drive around in cars done up to look like police cars and often have guard dogs. They drive around in the dead of night supposedly providing a deterant to criminals.

Though in reality they can’t do anything. It’s all for show. The dogs which bark fiercely are restrained and if they were to savage someone the security firms would be sued. And they wouldn’t like that much. The private security industry is worth an estimated 4.3 Billion in the UK alone.

They basically provide the same role as a good Samaritan as all they are told to do is call the police if they see anything happening. And we all know how long it takes for them to respond. So unless you have a few extra grand to splash there isn’t much point to the private security firms.

Designer Brands

I’ve never really seen the point of designer labels like Gucci, Louis Vuitton or D&G. By buying them it tells certain things about you. And none of them are good things. Not good at all.

Firstly, by solely buying designer brands it shows that you have more money than style. It means that you don’t really care what you wear, as long as other people know that what you are wearing is expensive. And that you have money. Which is pretty tacky.

Secondly, by subscribing to the high end brands it pretty much makes you a sheep, eager to follow the trend. Items that spring to mind were those horrible Louis Vuitton handbags with the flowers all over them. They become a must have item for followers of a fad. People who wear them call themselves trendsters but they are merely following something set by Vogue and Elle not pioneering one!

Then there are those that argue that by spending loads on designers brands means that you are guaranteed comfort and quality, yet again, there is hardly a difference when it’s for everyday use. Maybe if you’re going down a red carpet it may be suitable but for pretty much any other occasion it’s just showy and unnecessary. And normally the clothes are far from comfortable.

But worse than all of these is the fact that the people who coat themselves head to toe in these items are one of either three things. Arabs, Russians or Turbo Sloanes and who want to be one of those? Boo to designer brands and your style-less followers.

RIP Britanny Murphy

Brittany_Murphy

Reports are flooding in that Brittany Murphy has died. The 32 year old star of Clueless and 8 Mile died of a heart attack in LA this morning.

It’s still early days but in the wake of Jackson Mania and the general interest in celebrities dying young this’ll no doubt be in the news for a while.

Thoughts are with her friends and family, etc, etc.

Fuck You I Won’t Do What You Told Me!

After the epic battle for Christmas number 1 we finally have a Christmas number 1 that isn’t religious or crap. Well done to Rage Against The Machine for stopping the pop machine! It topped the chart with 500,000 sales of Killing In The Name Of. Fuck you I won’t do what you told me!

House Boats

waterliving1

When you think of house boats you think of Rosie and Jim-esq narrow boats complete with the Sylvanian Family. But these days, things have moved on a little bit.

House boats now are exactly that. Complete house with bedrooms, studies and central heating. What’s even better is that they cost less money as a real house.

Sprouting up all along the Thames, alongside the modern developments are a spate of moorings. More so, there are whole communities that are building on the edge of the water.

As I write this I’m sitting on one of the aforementioned modern house boats. In the large dining room you get a view down the whole river. Occasionally boats and tenders pass by but the most frequent traveller is the odd duck or swan that swims past. There is no traffic noise and the air has that fresh smell that only water can produce.

But the best thing is how quiet it is. There are no noisy neighbours or roadworks. It’s pristine and beautiful and in London, that’s pretty hard to find.
