There was once a day when Apple were a relatively niche company that were but a tiny dot on Microsoft’s radar. Not a serious competitor and nothing to be worried about. But now things are different. It seems like whatever Macintosh, the unsexy and clunky name that they aren’t really known by, turn their hand to they make the best.
I remember a time when we used to use them in the computer room at school. They weren’t particularly great and nobody saw where they were going. When Windows 98 came out Microsoft were the masters of the computer universe. Everyone had one. Now, it’s difficult to find someone at all.
Then Steve Jobs, the guy behind the turn around rejoined the company. He is a computer visionary that will go down in history.
He changed everything with the launch of the iPod. It launched on 23 October 2001 after only a year in development and immediately became the must have item for everyone. Since the day the iPod launched it seemed like evryone on the tube had white headphones, and they just get better. Videos, more space and better looking. Every time.
It put Apple on the map. At the same time they were developing the iMac laptop range which had launched in 1998 after an all time low for the company. The success of the iPod had reinvigorated Apple and freed up loads of money for research and development.
The Macbook’s became ultra stylised and ultra fast. The operating systems became known by their big cat names. Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. That’s awesome. Then they came out with the best advert ever.
And the rest as they say is history. Mac are now the best thing in the world to have. Fast, beautiful and so much easier to use than PC’s. Now Windows 7 is out and Microsoft are running scared we’ll see what they can do to fight back against the people who made computers sexy. All hail Apple.
