You Are A Commodity

On Thursday night it was my friend Tarik’s birthday. I’d been out at Maddox and got to his about 2, a little worse for wear. As is the case sometimes, I ended up having a drunken conversation with one of his other friends I barely knew. But as I drunken prattled I came out with something both cynical and profound.

You are a commodity. You are a small cog in the economy and all you are doing is trying to increase your value so that you can be traded for a better price and hope to make some money in the process.

As a commodity you should brand yourself and work at self-marketting yourself. By considering yourself as a brand then you can sell yourself more efficiently and make more money out of whatever you want to do.

For example, when you meet someone you aim to tell them your goals and ambitions in life before you leave. Who knows, anyone you talk to may take an interest and help you.

Another point raised was that people are more likely to help you of their own free will and if they truly desire to and work harder than if you pay them.

We can’t all have PR companies but we can do their jobs ourselves and get similar results.
